I think I blew up a 1UZ-FE at work. God damn it.

“Run the car and see where it’s leaking oil from”

“Ok” *doesn’t realise it HAS NO OIL IN IT from already all leaking out*

*moves car to different section of the lot and lets it run*

*doesn’t see any oil coming out after 10 minutes, thinks the leak isn’t that bad*

*leave car idling for a half hour while I go do a heater core bypass on a leaky Mustang*

“Jake you blew up the LS400”

“Fuck”

I may or may not have to buy a new engine now. Because I can totally afford that.

Well. Shit. Maybe not a new engine but a refurbished or used engine?

Too be honest this is totally something I would of done as well. I never once thought until just now that it might be a good idea to check the oil prior to checking for leaks.

In your situation I would of done the exact same thing. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Shops have insurance for this type of stuff. I don’t think they will make you pay for it.

Ouch. Does that have to come out of your pocket? I would think that shops have some kind of insurance for that.

Not that it’s any consolation, but you’ve successfully found the only way I am aware of to damage a 1UZ engine...

I watched a coworker do this to an experimental aircraft engine. Slightly different reason and outcome.

It was a two-stroke engine (Rotax 582) that uses oil injection instead of pre-mixed fuel so you fill up a small, separate oil tank.

We’d just installed the engine and were going to run it up. Oil injection tank: full.

Vroom! *sputter*

Coworker: “Fuuuuuuuuuu...”
Me: “What happened?”
Coworker: “I forgot to bleed the oil injector line.”
Me: (!!!)

We got away light: lacking lubrication, the brass gear that drives the rotary valve sheared, shutting the engine down before it needed a full rebuild. Unfortunately, we had to take it back off the plane and were down for two days driving it to a shop to be taken apart, have the brass shavings removed and the gear replaced.

I feel your pain.

Take it as a lesson: write up a checklist for things like engine run-ups and include “check oil level” in the pre-start.

Says alot about the engine that it lasted that long with no oil.

You most likely shouldn’t have to pay even though you fucked it up. Generally the company pays for these sorts of accidents.

When I was in construction I was supposed to drill holes through a wall at certain points. Because the drill wouldn’t quite fit I drilled at an angle to make sure the whole was big enough. (18 year old logic)

Brilliant. The construction company had to hire a mason to fill in the gaps from me making the hole in the brick wall too big. That probably cost close to $1K to have him come out and do that. It was totally my fault, but because it was an error that occurred in doing my job I didn’t have to pay.

Now had I come in off hours and fucked up something that I wasn’t supposed to be messing with then I may have to pay.

On one hand you did as you were told, on the other... Did you even check the oil level first?

~45 minutes of running with minimal oil. Well done toyota.

You’re not alone. One day on start up I thought, “Huh the lifters sure are loud today”. I turn it off and pop the hood to check the oil. Nothing. Dip again. Nothing. 0_o Needless to say I threw in a few quarts and planned for a proper oil change soon. Strangely, never had that issue again. 5M: 1 Oil Goblins: 0.

Nope. I had no recollection of what the car was even in here for since it had been sitting for two or three weeks, all I knew was a car leaked oil and I needed to find out where from.

My boss just said not to worry about it. When the car came in it had actually shut off due to being driven with no oil, so there’s no way me letting it idle dry did any more damage than that.

Pretty sure we *don’t* have insurance for this, being as bare-bones as this place is. Fortunately I was told I don’t need to worry about it; the customer did far more damage to the engine than I could have possibly done by letting it idle. They actually drove it with no oil until the engine shut off, then it was towed here, all of the oil powerwashed off, and then it sat for three weeks and nobody did anything to it. Of course, I was aware of 0% of this when told to find the leak.

Was it Matt Farah’s million mile Lexus?

Also, don’t feel bad. I wrecked an Audi A6’s wheel and tire today. The wheel is repairable, but the tire is pretty well screwed.

I bumped a not-quite-open-far-enough overhead bay door in our warehouse with a forklift. Since the several ton lift was only crawling, it permanently bowed the door and jumped partway off the tracks, rather than ripping the tracks completely out of the wall. We all have moments like these.

Be up front with your supervisor (praying that they’re understanding), and learn from the mistake. That’s all you can do, and that’s hopefully all that others will expect.

My boss just said not to worry about it. When the car came in it had actually shut off due to being driven with no oil, so there’s no way me letting it idle dry did any more damage than that. I am very thankful, because a $750 junkyard engine would basically ruin my life for 6 months.

You would be surprised. My auto class in hs ran a small block Chevy without oil to show what happens. We gave up after the two hour class period had ended with no failure.
